1st Impression

My review on Hip Hop Duo 1st new album "1st Impression"

“1st” If you’re a continuous reader of my work you’ll have herd this name before. Jelani Clay (AKA JClay) and Troy Washington (AKA Supreme) make up the Dallas based hip hop duo “1st”.  Well, here they are again! With a brand new album “1st Impression” which dropped September 1st 2014.

Some of their hit singles on the album include “Guys Night Out”. A fun song about guys going out to have fun. Proving that men don’t just go out to find women but “guys just want to have fun” too. (Listen here:https://soundcloud.com/1st-forever/guys-night-out )                                                                            And “Free” A man’s perspective on relationship problems.  (Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/1st-forever/free-explicit).
Something I’m told by the “old school” hip hop lovers, that the “new school hip hop” is missing is the story telling aspect. This album definitely touches on that, so old school and new school can get something from this album. But, my favorite thing about this album is it is relatable. These guys make music for the regular every day average Joe that likes hip hop. Not all of us are pistol toting, drug dealing, many women chasing, gang banging, hip hop lovers. Not everyone can relate to that type of music but these songs are about regular, every day, relatable topics. Yet, they are unique. Take the song “free” for example. I love this song because even though it is a regular, every day topic that is relatable to most husbands/boyfriends, it is unique. It’s never been done before. You very rarely hear men speak on how their women make them feel. Unless it’s about love, being cheated on or missing that special someone. This song makes us females understand our men a little bit more. Which is great because men don’t explain how our actions make them feel.

My personal favorite is “Don’t Like Me”. (Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/1st-forever/dont-like-me)  My favorite thing about Hip Hop and Rap music is it can be a non-violent way to help you get your anger out. Whether you are rap battling or just rapping along. It is an amazing anger release.  This song is perfect for that especially if you’re not in to the “I’ma shoot you or stab you” kind of anger releasing music. This is again, relate-able.We all have those people that just straight up hate on us and this song makes you feel better.

Another awesome song on this album is “Future Mothers Of America” I won’t go in to too much detail about this song as you have to buy the album to hear it and I don’t want to ruin it for you ;) but they are pretty much saying what everyone else is thinking about the young generation and that they, their children and the world deserve much better for them, and from them.

There are so many different, relatable, awesome songs on this album, and the nice thing is it’s not just one tone throughout. You have “uppers” and “downers” as I like to call them. You have songs that make you feel good, happy, upbeat. Then, you have the songs that make you feel emotion and make you think.  These guys put a lot of time and effort into this album. Not just the music in itself but promotion, and research.  Go buy the album today!

My Momma

This is a poem I wrote dedicated to my mother for her birthday.
She raised me, put up with my crazy teenage years and after all of that she still loves me. I love you mom! Happy birthday!

My momma, she carried me.

My momma, she raised me.

My momma, she sacrificed for me.

My momma, she gave me.

My momma, she was my daddy for me.

My momma, she put no man above me.

My momma, she kept her struggle a secret for me.

My momma, she never understood me.

My Momma, she always tried for me.

My momma, she learned to love what I loved for me.

My momma, she put up with me.

My momma, she would go to bat for me.

My momma, she would never tell on me.

My momma, she always prayed for me.

My momma, she wanted badly for me.

My momma, she wished well for me.

My momma, she forgave me.

But most of all, my momma?

She loves me….
