1st Impression

My review on Hip Hop Duo 1st new album "1st Impression"

“1st” If you’re a continuous reader of my work you’ll have herd this name before. Jelani Clay (AKA JClay) and Troy Washington (AKA Supreme) make up the Dallas based hip hop duo “1st”.  Well, here they are again! With a brand new album “1st Impression” which dropped September 1st 2014.

Some of their hit singles on the album include “Guys Night Out”. A fun song about guys going out to have fun. Proving that men don’t just go out to find women but “guys just want to have fun” too. (Listen here:https://soundcloud.com/1st-forever/guys-night-out )                                                                            And “Free” A man’s perspective on relationship problems.  (Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/1st-forever/free-explicit).
Something I’m told by the “old school” hip hop lovers, that the “new school hip hop” is missing is the story telling aspect. This album definitely touches on that, so old school and new school can get something from this album. But, my favorite thing about this album is it is relatable. These guys make music for the regular every day average Joe that likes hip hop. Not all of us are pistol toting, drug dealing, many women chasing, gang banging, hip hop lovers. Not everyone can relate to that type of music but these songs are about regular, every day, relatable topics. Yet, they are unique. Take the song “free” for example. I love this song because even though it is a regular, every day topic that is relatable to most husbands/boyfriends, it is unique. It’s never been done before. You very rarely hear men speak on how their women make them feel. Unless it’s about love, being cheated on or missing that special someone. This song makes us females understand our men a little bit more. Which is great because men don’t explain how our actions make them feel.

My personal favorite is “Don’t Like Me”. (Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/1st-forever/dont-like-me)  My favorite thing about Hip Hop and Rap music is it can be a non-violent way to help you get your anger out. Whether you are rap battling or just rapping along. It is an amazing anger release.  This song is perfect for that especially if you’re not in to the “I’ma shoot you or stab you” kind of anger releasing music. This is again, relate-able.We all have those people that just straight up hate on us and this song makes you feel better.

Another awesome song on this album is “Future Mothers Of America” I won’t go in to too much detail about this song as you have to buy the album to hear it and I don’t want to ruin it for you ;) but they are pretty much saying what everyone else is thinking about the young generation and that they, their children and the world deserve much better for them, and from them.

There are so many different, relatable, awesome songs on this album, and the nice thing is it’s not just one tone throughout. You have “uppers” and “downers” as I like to call them. You have songs that make you feel good, happy, upbeat. Then, you have the songs that make you feel emotion and make you think.  These guys put a lot of time and effort into this album. Not just the music in itself but promotion, and research.  Go buy the album today!

My Momma

This is a poem I wrote dedicated to my mother for her birthday.
She raised me, put up with my crazy teenage years and after all of that she still loves me. I love you mom! Happy birthday!

My momma, she carried me.

My momma, she raised me.

My momma, she sacrificed for me.

My momma, she gave me.

My momma, she was my daddy for me.

My momma, she put no man above me.

My momma, she kept her struggle a secret for me.

My momma, she never understood me.

My Momma, she always tried for me.

My momma, she learned to love what I loved for me.

My momma, she put up with me.

My momma, she would go to bat for me.

My momma, she would never tell on me.

My momma, she always prayed for me.

My momma, she wanted badly for me.

My momma, she wished well for me.

My momma, she forgave me.

But most of all, my momma?

She loves me….

A descriptive look at Hip Hop duo "1st"
                                                     (supreme Left/JClay Right)
Introducing, from the hip hop music group “1st” Troy Washington and Jelani Clay AKA “Supreme” and JClay”.Supreme is 32 and was born in Dallas Tx, but raised in many places. “I was born in Dallas Texas but was raised in numerous places.  My mom was young when she had me so we move from city to city in the metroplex just trying to get by.  Dad really wasn’t in the picture so it was a struggle.  I ended up for a big portion of my life living with my dad’s mom in Fort Worth.”  JClay is also 32 and was born in Chicago and after High school moved to Texas for college as he had a full scholarship to prairie view A&M.  “I was born and raised in Chicago.  After HS graduation as valedictorian I moved to TX for college because Prairie View A&M gave me a full ride scholarship.”

When asked about his childhood Supreme touched base on what it taught him. “The main thing about my childhood that defines me is that no one ever gave me anything.  I remember times not having lunch money clothes $h!t even parents at some point so that has given me the mentality of get it yourself no excuses.” JClaysays his childhood prepared him for this moment. “Everything from my childhood prepared me for this moment. I’ll just name a couple.  I always loved actual music. I used to re-create beats off of the radio on my keyboard.  I would listen to a song and not know one word, but know every single sound/instrument involved and the frequency of it.  I figured out quick how to use my voice as one of those instruments to blend perfectly with the track.  A lot of people forget that rap is a form of music. They concentrate too hard on the rapping and not enough on the music. Also my best friend growing up and I would make these skit shows with my boombox recorder. It was geared to make people laugh.  So now with each one of my verses I try to put a little comedy in it.  Also when it’s time for skits on a release, people come to me.”
                                                                      (Supreme)
Supreme originally had a nick name from childhood he used as his stage name. “My original name was Tadow, which is a childhood name given by friends and family.” But he originally started rapping with a different label and they wanted it changed so one day he was rapping with a friend and said a line with the word supreme in it and his friend said that should be his name and he rolled with it. JClay got his name from the first letter of his first name (Jelani) and his last name (Clay) and put them together. However when he was a kid the first rap name he gave himself was “Jammin J” but in his words, it sounded wiggady wiggady wack.”
They have a great story for how they met each other and how they started. Supreme said; “We met each other in college through what I would say is a typical chain of events even though I think it’s a blessing that we have come this far.  In college the other group I rapped with the owner told me that JClay had stolen a song from him that had become popular on campus.  So in loyalty mode we started to make diss records then JClay fired back.  This started to get us notoriety on the campus as well and one day I ended up meeting him at which time we squashed whatever may be considered a beef.  Shortly after we started to feature on each other’s songs and from then it’s been a rap.” JClay added; we both noticed that in each other we were down to do whatever for the music.  Without knowing each other for that long, we took trips to Atlanta, New Orleans, and Miami together selling over 5,000 copies of our CDs.  That’s kind of how we formed a bond and gained many many fans.”
                                                                  (JClay)
Supreme started rapping when he was in high school. “Throughout high school we would freestyle just to be funny but never putting any effort to it plus I never thought I could rap. I was truly a choir boy (no five heartbeats). When I first went to college I started off making beats for all the people in my immediate circle of friends.  Then it happened, I heard the slim shady LP and I knew then I gotta rap. I got with my best friend who is a supremely talented rapper and asked him to show me technique.  Since then I have been practicing my craft until my moment arrives.  As for my friend he is one of my biggest supporters now though he has chosen not to rap.” JClay started when he was 10. “As a kid (around 10 years old) I always tried to rap, but I sucked and never believed I had what it took.  I always loved music so I honed my skills as a producer.  In college (17-21 years old) I was always looking for rappers to get on my beats, but could find none.  So I started making my own silly songs to make people laugh.  Everybody liked them.  Shortly after meeting Supreme (I was still around 21 years old), I submitted two beats for his “Name Dem Shows” mixtape, where every beat was a television show theme made to be a hip hop track.  Supreme told me I was good and wanted me to rap on both tracks.  On the Simpsons beat I was my usual silly self.  However on my Price Is Right beat it was the 1st time I was real about my feelings and the struggle I was having.  After hearing it, I gained more confidence and started rapping seriously on more of my beats.” When ask who their favorite rappers are they both had the same answer. Supreme said; “I used to have favorite rappers but I don’t anymore.  I think that because I have grown so much as an artist I don’t look at them as superior to me anymore but only as peers.  So my favorite rapper is me.” JClay’s answer; “This is going to sound arrogant or cheesy, but I’m my favorite rapper.  Seriously.  I work hard on my craft and I’m constantly amazing myself with the lines I come up with.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m fans of others, but I truly am my favorite.  I go so hard, lol.”  But, Supreme would like to work with my favorite artist. “One day because he is part of the reason I make music I would like to do a song with Eminem.” And JClay wants to work with Kanye. “It’s so many people.  The 1st that comes to mine is Kanye West. I gotta work with Kanye.  Based on his music, I feel like we can just come up with something crazy.”
Not only are these guys talented hip hop music artists but they do website design, graphic design, song writing, mixing, mastering, photography, videography, producing, beat making, and managing. And as for their goals for the future and their music, Supreme wants them to have the most successful label in their Country that everyone knows and wants to follow. JClay wants their label to have superstars and their music to be timeless.
When asked what they’d like the world to know about them individually and what advice they had for up and coming hip hop music artists, Supreme said; “I love music and I do it for myself and my fans that will never change”” I would just ask them do you think you can become  a dr.  if they say no then I would say you can’t become a rapper.  The same effort it takes to become something you have a clear blueprint to do, it takes that plus some to become a rapper.  If they say yes I would say then you will become a rapper just don’t give in or give up.”

JClay said; “I’m just a guy that believes everything is possible and hard work will always bring great results.” I would say do it because you love music and not to be cool.  It’s a tough road and very competitive.  If you can’t love something in the midst of hate, it’s not for you.  But if you love it, the only way you won’t succeed is if you give up.” Go listen to their music and support these two talented hip hop music artists!

Cutty Currency

A descriptive look at independent hip hop music artist Cutty Currency.
My Next hip hop music artists is a personal friend of mine, Curtis Stevens…… AKA “Cutty Currency”. Cutty was born in Milwaukee Wisconsin and grew up in La Crosse Wisconsin.  He started rapping when he was 13. “My mother's friends where over and they heard me and my lil bro upstairs in our room listening to Snoop Dogg "Gin & Juice"... So they walked in on us and one of them said they would pay us 5 bucks a piece if we rapped the song to them! My 1st thought was you'll pay me to rap that to you!? I got paid that day and have been ever since!”
Growing up Cutty and his family lacked the money others had. But it molded him and his music into what it is now. “I went to schools where the kids were very rich & materialistic. So that's what mattered... Popularity, how much money do your people have, cars & clothes. I didn't have that. As a family we were well taken care of and lived by our means! But I promised myself that I'd get it by any means...I grew up wanting it all so that's what I rapped about!”
Jay-Z is Cutty’s favorite rap music artist and the artists he’d like to work with most. “Because I feel the type of art I'd be able to create with his musical genius there to help me paint my words on wax!! Boy, when I say I picture myself reading Stories of Money... Making at least one song with the Greatest is in one of the chapters!”  When asked who inspires Cutty, he shouts out his team! “Currency Music Group as a whole! My team, Mysta J the Titan & Mz. Prize especially, they keep me reaching for higher levels of myself, right along with being incredible artists themselves. I know I'm inspired to keep up with their musical minds and just that keeps me on a level that makes music instead of noise!”
He has worked with some awesome names; Lil Flip, Dj Unk, Crime Mob, Dem Franchize Boyz, Hurricane Chris, Bone Crusher, Mike Jones, Huey, Coo Coo Cal, Do or Die, Tone Trump. One big name hes worked with is “Twista”. “I wouldn't say one is any bigger than the others, Just at different stages in their careers. I'd say in my opinion "Twista" for the simple fact I respect his hustle 100%. I came up from listening to his music daily to rockin the same stage with him. That was cool pretty cool to me.”
Cutty would like to remain independent, grow nationally and continue to make quality music. He is a dedicated, amazing hip hop music artist who is not only a great music artist but a great person. Cutty also has a great sense of humor and is always keeping me laughing. When I asked him if he does anything besides rapping cutty says he “Stays fly as fuck!” (lol) or when I asked his age he said “The same age as my music... timeless!”  His message to anyone trying to become a hip hop artist is, “Make your next move your best move...”  Go check out CuttyCurrency you won’t regret it!

Yung Kaz

A descriptive look at up and coming hip hop music artist Yung Kaz.

This rap music artist I am going to introduce you to is 25 year old Mathew Coleman AKA “Young Kaz”.  Young Kazwas born in Kissimmee, Fl, raised in Lineville, Al and is currently back in Kissimmee, Fl. Kaz was about 15 or 16 when he started rapping.  “I used to write poems and had one of my good friends named Nikkya read it and he thought that it was a rap. Told me to put it on a beat and record it. He worked with me for a while and with practice I got better.”  When asked about his childhood and how it affects his music Kaz says “Well for 9 years of my life I lived in Alabama. I was into a lot of fishing and camping, Also mud riding. At this time in my life I was a country boy and didn't even like Hip Hop and Rap. My childhood in Alabama was simple. Went to school and played football with the city league. When I moved back to Florida is when my childhood got rough. I started hanging around the wrong people and started getting into a lot of trouble with the law. Got into a lot of fights and started selling drugs and robbing people. Met a special person a few years down the road and decided that it was time for a change because if I kept going down my route I was going to either end up dead or in prison. My life affects my music a lot because I put my life into all my songs, also all my pain and experiences.”  When asked about inspiration Kaz gives all the credit to his wife. “Really it was multiple people and things that inspire me. My Wife really pushed me to peruse my music so I'm going to say that she inspires me.”  Young Kaz so far has worked with his manager “jimmy Cruz” (follow Jimmy on twitter: Jcruzbvl407) and wants to work with his favorite Rapper “Tech n9ne”.  “I would really love to work with Tech N9ne. The reason behind that is because I love his style and how he did it all on his own, His own label and independently. The fact that he raps about how he really feels about life and religion. He's an amazing artist.” Young Kaz has been labeled “the bad guy” but he wants the world to know that it is possible to change. “I used to be the bad guy but decided that the bad guy wasn't me at all. Hence the song “Bad to Good”. I made a change and to the people that say people can't change, you’re wrong because I did. I will always stay on my G.M.S. (Grown Man Shit).” His goals for the future are to be able to do something that he love’s and to share his love, pain, and life to the World through his music. When asked what advice he’d give people trying to become a rap music artist, Young Kaz said “I would tell them that if this is your dream, then push it until you make it reality. Also learn how to accept negative feedback along with the good. Experience and patients can take you a long way in this world but drive and the determination to never quit can help you open the doors.” Check YoungKaz out:

Cherish Paris Music

A descriptive look at up and coming rap music artists Cherish Paris.

I am proud to introduce you to my first music artist of the year and my first female rap artist! Sixteen year old Chitown rapper Eugena Green AKA “Cherish Paris”. Cherish was born and raised on the north side of Cabrini Green in Chicago Illinois. When asked about how she started rapping and when, she said “Rapping for me started off as a joke that I just did to make laughs with my friends but now it’s something I take serious because I know I have the skills and what it takes. I was 14 years old and a freshman in high school.” Not only is Cherish a sixteen year old rapper, she is also a mother of a beautiful 3 month old baby boy and is a hard working student determined to finish high school. When asked who inspires her and why Cherish gives a shout out to everyone grinding “anyone who is grinding and working towards their dream I look up to because it’s not easy.”  cherish’s childhood wasn’t perfect but it made her who she is today. “My child hood wasn't always good but I was able to cope with the hand I was dealt I feel like without my past, I wouldn’t be here let alone rapping. I choose rapping as my escape of all my worries and pain, rapping affected my music because I talk about the things I been through in my life and how I’m getting past all of it and making myself a better person.”   There are a few rap music artists Cherish Paris would like to work with and a few favorites she has. “I would like to work with spenzo & chella h because they rap about whats real and have an open and free mind. chella h was also a young mother like me while me and spenzo are the same age.” (more on Spenzo  and Chella h http://www.hipwiki.com/Spenzo  /  http://www.hipwiki.com/Chella+H-Rapper )  Her favorite rappers are Drake and Meek Millz. When asked about her future plans and goals for her music Cherish Paris says “my goal is to get my name out more and make my fan base larger and I want to succeed in being an all-around rapper.” When asked about what kind of a message she wants people to know about her she says: “I would like the world to know I’m coming so look out for me and tune in you won’t regret it!”
She also has an amazing message for all the up and coming rappers and following their dreams: “ follow your heart and stay true to who you are, never let anyone tell you, you can’t do it and you have to be ready for a lot of letdown you have to be strong for the rap game it’s no joke.” For me being a young female in love with rap music I never had the guts, Confidence or strength to follow my dreams into rap music so to see a young female going in to a mainly male based profession with such strength and confidence truly makes me smile.
